A6022 proposed improvements

Overview

Rotherham Council has secured funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) to introduce a series of road safety measures along the A6022.

The scheme includes a number of collision reduction measures between the Doncaster Council boundary and the junction with the A633 at Woodman Roundabout, covering approximately 2.9km.

The route passes through Swinton and has been identified as a priority area for road safety improvements.

The funding comes from Round 3 of the Government’s Safer Roads Fund and focuses on reducing future risk, rather than only addressing recorded injury collisions.

Proposed approach

The scheme mainly uses established road safety engineering measures, based on recommendations from Vehicle Information and Diagnostics for Aftersales (VIDA) software.

Scheme objectives

  • Reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured over the next 20 years through targeted engineering measures.
  • Support South Yorkshire’s Vision Zero strategy to halve road deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

Proposed interventions

  1. Sheltered parking and roadside hatching at various locations
  2. Pedestrian crossing refuges at various locations
  3. Traffic-calming chicane near Brameld Road
  4. Junction safety kerb improvements at Racecourse Road
  5. Three-arm signalised junction at Queens Street, with pedestrian crossings on all arms
  6. Revised give-way lines at Wortley Avenue, Crossland Street and Broomville Street, including kerb buildouts
  7. Gateway feature on Rowms Lane
  8. Updated and refreshed road markings

Please note: Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) works are not part of this scheme. They are being delivered separately by the Highways and Flood Risk Service and are included here for information only.
