Broom Road / Wickersley Road proposed Extension Corridor
Overview
Between November 2024 and April 2025, we sought feedback on the Broom Road/Wickersley Road Extension Corridor (Active Travel and Bus Priority Measures) and how we should use funding for neighbourhood streets from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement. We thank all those who have been involved and contributed suggestions so far.
Since then, we have been developing proposals for the Wickersley Road corridor, taking account of feedback from local residents and stakeholders. We will refer to these designs as 'the primary scheme'. With the support of local ward councillors, we have also prioritised a full programme of neighbourhood investment, using £1.72million of protected funding to improve the areas the community saw the most need. We will refer to these as 'neighbourhood streets'. All the designs are now published on the council website, and we’d love your feedback.
The funding requirements state that designs must:
- Increase active travel usage along Broom Road, Wickersley Road, at Stag Roundabout and in the Broom Valley neighbourhood following the implementation of new or improved pedestrian and cycle infrastructure.
- Increase bus patronage and reduce bus journey times on bus routes operating on Broom Road, Wickersley Road and through Stag Roundabout, following implementation of bus priority measures.
- Improve local perceptions of road safety along Broom Road, Wickersley Road, Moorgate Road, Broom Lane, Brunswick Road and Broom Valley Road, following implementation of traffic management measures.

We want to give people more choice in how they travel whilst improving safety and convenience. We’re working towards:
- Safer, calmer streets – so more people feel confident walking, wheeling, or cycling, with calmer roads, more welcoming public spaces, and safe routes to school.
- Better bus services – by helping buses run on time and making them a more reliable and attractive way to travel.
- Tackling poor driving and parking – to improve the experience for everyone using the roads, helping people feel safer and supporting healthier, happier lives.
The proposed ideas include:
- Safer journeys to school - protecting children by lowering speeds around primary schools in the area.
- More reliable buses - introducing a bus lane on Broom Road and Wickersley Road to help buses run on time and improve journey times.
- Safer and more welcoming crossings - upgrading crossing points around the area so that people can cross easily and safely.
- Better cycling routes - connecting up existing cycle lanes and adding more protection to keep cyclists safe.
-
Smoother pavements – fixing uneven, narrow and damaged pavements to prevent water from pooling and to make it easier for everyone, including people using wheelchairs, mobility aids, and pushchairs.
Funding for the scheme was secured from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement. The Council is supported and part funded by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. The Mayor and MCA have a shared purpose to create a stronger, greener, fairer South Yorkshire, to work together to unlock the potential of South Yorkshire people, businesses and places and ensure they prosper. Why your views matter
In Rotherham, we want to provide everyone with a choice in how they travel. This ensures car ownership is never a barrier to education or employment, our most vulnerable road users are well protected and comfortable, and children can stay safe whilst travelling independently.
Giving your feedback on the proposed designs helps us to ensure that our designs meet this goal, and work for the local community.
Your comments will also help the Council to create streets which are safer, calmer and more comfortable for everyone.
