Hague Lane, Wentworth - Proposed 40mph speed limit

Overview

Proposed 40mph Speed Limit – Hague Lane, Wentworth

Hague Lane serves as a one of the key approach roads to the historic village of Wentworth, a location that attracts high visitor numbers throughout the year due to destinations such as Wentworth Woodhouse, Wentworth Church, and the Wentworth Garden Centre. Visitors to the area often park at the Wentworth Garden Centre and walk along Hague Lane to access these destinations. The existing footways along this route are narrow with limited separation between pedestrians and moving traffic.

The current speed limit on Hague Lane is the national speed limit. A seven‑day traffic speed survey undertaken on site recorded average vehicle speeds adjacent to the garden centre of 34.7 mph. This indicates that a 40 mph speed limit would be appropriate, achievable, and self‑enforcing, aligning vehicular behaviour with a limit that better reflects the character and usage of the road in this location.

Introducing a 40 mph speed limit will:

  • Improve motorist awareness of a change in road character in this location, where they are more likely to encounter pedestrian activity generated by tourism.
  • Contribute to an overall safer route for all road users, including cyclists and equestrians.

For these reasons, it is proposed to replace the existing national speed limit with a 40 mph speed limit on Hague Lane, as shown below.
